Toy Bulldog, Oil on Canvas Signed Painting by Marguerite Kirmse. Famous for extraordinary renderings of dogs, Marguerite Kirmse (1885-1954) was arguably America's finest pet artist. She was born in England and schooled at The Royal Academy of Music. She emigrated to the United States, and there she joined her love for dogs and art. Perhaps her most prolific and successful period was the 1910s. She was in high demand for book illustrations and her etchings of dogs, many belonging to Kirmse and her husband, a former kennel club president. Though she is famous for a great body of work, fewer oils ever come into the marketplace. This one is a very fine example and rare. The canvas is entirely intact--never mounted on board. It could be cleaned, but in general... exceptional as the artist herself.
